Is It Time for a UN Charter 2.0?

Writer: Oneness WorldOneness World

Almost 80 years ago, on June 26, 1945, in San Francisco, the most important law you’ve probably never read was signed. This agreement, the United Nations Charter, is the closest thing we have to an international constitution.

Some have proposed that the 80th anniversary of this text may be an appropriate occasion to begin discussions about a new and improved Charter 2.0. Many believe that the current UN Charter may require some degree of substantive reform if it is to be capable of addressing the challenges facing the world today.

So, as we celebrate 80 years, let us acknowledge the immense importance of this document and of the UN as a whole and let us praise the selfless efforts of UN staff and humanitarians across the world.

At the same time, instead of seeing the Charter as the end of our global political evolution, perhaps it is more appropriate to start looking at this text more as a stepping-stone towards something much bolder, much more democratic and much more capable of addressing the big issues plaguing the planet and its people.

Oneness World is currently working with acclaimed film director Omar Naim to produce a feature documentary commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Charter, but also suggesting some of the components that will be needed to about the better world we all know is possible.
